Dark and scary and evil, but still fun

I rediscovered my love for dark genre goodness today (well yesterday, actually, since its just past midnight right now...hm..)! I have this strange and uncontrollable love for all things dystopian and cyberpunk, which are predominately dark-themed, and I retain this insatiable love for it even though it often scares the piss out of me. Not literally. :)

For those of you who don't know the lingo, aren't in the groove or generally aren't down with this shiznit, a popular example would be The Matrix. (All hail The Matrix *bows to the DVD*) The Matrix is basically a cross between a dystopia and cyberpunk. A dystopia, generally speaking, is a fictional idea of a [highly] unpleasant future typically based on extremities of our modern day world. Dystopias have been written about for centuries, sometimes as a warning as to what might happen if society continues in the direction it is going, with, of course, some creative license taken. Cyberpunk is the genre from which spawned terms like cyberspace, cyberkinetics, and mega-cities. Cyberpunk tales almost always revolve around technology, and, more specifically, a technological dystopia, such as the real world in the Matrix.

Things like this fascinate me to no end. Often unhealthily. *Twitch* Seriously. It's like this sick, twisted affair dystopias and I are having. But, as with all affairs, it's extremely gratifying. *Drooltwitch*

If you're interested in becoming as obsessed as me, dial 1-800-people-die, today! Or, you could go see these movies:

Battle Royale

A Clockwork Orange (crime dystopia)

Waterworld (post-apocalyptic dystopia)

Blade Runner (cyberpunk dystopia)

The Matrix

I'm also really looking forward to I, Robot. I hope it doesn't turn out to be crap...

Or, read these books!:

The Giver (yeah, lame, I know, but still thought-provoking) (psuedo-utopian dystopia)

1984 (totalitarian dystopia)

Brave new world (leisure dystopia)

Neuromancer (capitalistic dystopia)

Burning Chrome (cyberpunk)

Mindplayers (cyberpunk)

Pretty words that are thematic of film noir, and that make me feel all fuzzy inside:
